Economic Implications Loom as Trump Claims Gaza Deal Includes Major Policy Shifts

Date:

An agreement has been reached, according to US President Donald Trump, which outlines steps for the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. This proposal is seen as a pivotal move toward creating a new Palestinian administration in Gaza while also securing Israel’s safety in the long term. The plan is an extension of previous ceasefire discussions and includes several critical measures: the surrender of weapons and dismantling of tunnels by Hamas, Israeli troop withdrawal, the establishment of a technocratic Palestinian government, deployment of an international security force, and the reconstruction of the region.

Despite the announcement, significant disagreements persist regarding the execution of the agreement. Hamas has maintained that it will not commence disarmament until Israel completely pulls out from Gaza, arguing that commitments from both sides must occur simultaneously. On the other hand, Israeli officials have insisted on the full disarmament and demilitarization of Gaza before any withdrawal can happen. US officials have acknowledged the considerable differences that remain between the involved parties, noting Israel’s skepticism regarding Hamas’s compliance with the disarmament terms.

As part of the broader proposal, Hamas has also declared its intention to dissolve its governing body in Gaza, transferring authority to a technical committee supported by the United Nations. Efforts to finalize the details of the plan’s implementation are ongoing, with mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey actively participating in the discussions. These diplomatic conversations are crucial in addressing the complexities and ensuring that both parties meet their respective obligations.

Nonetheless, the situation on the ground remains tense, with ongoing conflict. Israeli military operations and airstrikes continue in Gaza, and Israel has signaled its intent to expand the territory under its military control. These actions underscore the formidable challenges in achieving a lasting ceasefire agreement, as the cycle of violence persists despite the diplomatic undertakings.
