Lavrov, Rubio Discuss Economic Impacts of Ukraine Conflict at ASEAN Summit

Date:

On the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio are set to meet to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, along with other bilateral matters. Both diplomats have confirmed their participation, emphasizing the importance of the dialogue in exploring potential avenues to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Additionally, the agenda might include discussions on future nuclear arms control cooperation, a topic of mutual interest.

U.S. Secretary of State Rubio highlighted that the central focus of the meeting will be to explore possible resolutions to the conflict in Ukraine, while also acknowledging the potential to cover a range of other crucial areas. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov expressed his intention to seek clarity on recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who hinted that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine might be closer than commonly perceived. Lavrov reiterated that Moscow still considers earlier U.S. peace proposals as a reference point for discussions.

This meeting takes place against a backdrop of stalled diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis, despite past initiatives aimed at facilitating negotiations. There have been suggestions that Russia has recently taken a more stringent stance on peace talks, although the Kremlin has dismissed these allegations.

The talks present an opportunity for both nations to exchange perspectives on the Ukraine conflict and other significant issues impacting U.S.-Russia relations. As diplomatic avenues remain limited, this meeting is seen as a crucial step in understanding each country’s position and exploring potential paths forward in a protracted geopolitical impasse.
