Moscow/Kyiv – The ongoing war is highlighting a fundamental clash in strategies: Russia’s reliance on brute force and territorial conquest versus Ukraine’s focus on building alliances and exposing covert threats.
Russia’s strategy is on full display with President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of capturing 5,000 square kilometers in 2025. This, combined with his claim of holding the “complete strategic initiative,” emphasizes a traditional, power-based approach to warfare.
Ukraine’s strategy is more nimble and collaborative. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s accusation that Russia is using oil tankers for espionage is a move to rally international partners. His statement that “we are working with our allies” and “it is entirely possible to stop this” underscores a reliance on collective action.
This strategic divergence is also evident in the diplomatic sphere. Putin is using threats of escalation over Tomahawk missiles to isolate Ukraine from its partners, attempting to break the alliance that sustains Kyiv’s defense.
The outcome of the war may well depend on which strategy proves more effective: Russia’s unilateral assertion of power or Ukraine’s multilateral campaign to build a united front against aggression.
