Musk’s AI Power Hub Approved: Mississippi Regulators Issue Turbine Permit

Date:

Elon Musk’s xAI has won a significant victory after Mississippi officials approved a permit for 41 methane gas turbines in Southaven. The decision by the MDEQ Permit Board allows the company to power its Colossus 2 datacenter with an on-site generation facility. This move is part of xAI’s broader mission to achieve “warp speed” in the global artificial intelligence race.
The turbines provide the 1.2 gigawatts of electricity needed to run the world’s largest single-site AI training installation. This computing power is used to develop Grok, a chatbot designed to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI. By building a private power plant, xAI can bypass the infrastructure delays that often hinder large-scale tech projects.
The decision has been met with a wave of protests from local residents and the NAACP. Opponents argue that the 41 turbines will make the facility one of the largest sources of smog-forming pollution in the area. At a recent public hearing, residents shared stories of persistent noise and respiratory issues they attribute to the facility’s operations.
The NAACP and Earthjustice have filed a notice of intent to sue, alleging that xAI is violating the Clean Air Act. They claim the company operated 27 unpermitted turbines for months before seeking formal approval from the state. Critics argue that the MDEQ has “rubber-stamped” the permit, ignoring the long-term health risks to the Southaven community.
Despite the controversy, xAI is moving forward with its $20 billion “Macrohardrr” datacenter, which is currently under construction nearby. This project is expected to bring hundreds of jobs and significant tax revenue to the state of Mississippi. However, the ongoing conflict between industrial growth and public health remains a primary concern for the local population.
