New Trail Highlights ‘Dramatic’ Vistas of New Mills

Date:

A “very dramatic” town of “magnificent bridges,” “stone viaducts,” and “vertiginous gorges” is a key destination on the new 62-mile Steel Cotton Rail Trail. New Mills is a “constellation” of engineering and natural beauty on the 14-section route.
Walkers on the trail, which links Manchester and Sheffield, will be stunned by the scenery. The town is built around “fast-flowing water,” and the “sweeping steel Millennium Walkway” offers breathtaking views into the canyon.
This “post-industrial” hub is also home to “the oldest community-owned hydro scheme in the land” and the historic Torr Vale Mill, the UK’s “longest-running textile mill” until 2000. It even has “lovely llamas in a bosky paddock.”
The town, which has “plenty of food and drink” options, is a perfect place to “stop or pause.” The trail’s “rail-pegged” design makes it easy to visit as a day trip.
This new, well-marked trail is a fantastic way to discover the “dramatic” and surprising landscapes of the Peak District, far from the usual tourist trails.
