Trump Returns with Offer to Solve “Complicated” Nile Issue

Date:

Donald Trump has returned with an offer to solve the “complicated” Nile issue. The former President has written to Egyptian leadership, proposing to resume U.S. efforts to settle the conflict with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Trump’s proposal focuses on mutual benefit. He argues that a “successful approach” would allow Ethiopia to generate electricity while guaranteeing “predictable water releases” for Egypt. He believes that with strong U.S. monitoring, this deal can be secured.
The dispute over the dam is one of the most critical water conflicts in the world. Egypt is almost entirely dependent on the Nile, and any reduction in flow is seen as a catastrophe. Ethiopia, however, views the dam as essential for its development.
Trump has frequently mentioned the dispute in the context of his Nobel Peace Prize lobbying. He has claimed to have prevented a war, despite the ongoing lack of a treaty. His recent acknowledgement of the dam as a “big problem” suggests he wants to see the issue resolved once and for all.
By re-engaging with the topic, Trump is hoping to use his influence to break the deadlock. His focus on “fair and transparent” talks suggests he wants to facilitate a deal that respects the rights of both nations.
