Google revives smart glasses, enhances search with AI to boost market position.

In a significant move that highlights its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence, Google has revealed enhancements to its search functionality, showcasing a more AI-driven approach. Announced during the annual Google I/O developer conference, the tech giant’s search bar will now handle more complex and conversational queries, allowing users to interact with Google’s chatbot directly. These updates are supported by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, which promises to generate extended text predictions based on user inputs and offer a more visually engaging search experience. This shift in search marks one of the most substantial changes in Google’s nearly three-decade history, as stated by Elizabeth Reid, the head of Google Search.

Google’s new features will be accessible globally on both desktop and mobile versions, offering users a choice between the traditional list of links or a new AI-enhanced overview. The company has observed record-high search queries, with the introduction of the “AI Mode” significantly increasing interactions through a Gemini-powered chatbot. The search bar will now automatically switch to AI mode if users input multimedia elements like photos or documents. This development aims to transform Google Search into a “universal assistant” as outlined by Josh Woodward, who leads the AI’s evolution, even as Gemini’s usage numbers still trail behind those of ChatGPT.

Furthermore, Google is expanding its use of AI with advanced features for subscribers of its AI Pro and Ultra plans, which include the ability to create autonomous “information agents” for in-depth research. The introduction of a “generative user interface” will allow for customized visuals and interactive content based on user requests. A notable feature, Gemini Spark, will integrate with users’ existing Google services like Gmail and Google Calendar, assisting in tasks ranging from research to planning trips.

On another front, Google is diving back into the realm of smart eyewear. In collaboration with partners Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster, Google is set to launch a new line of “intelligent eyewear” this fall. These glasses will feature voice-activated commands and built-in cameras, echoing similar products by Meta, which has worked with EssilorLuxottica since 2021. Google’s previous venture into smart glasses with Google Glass in 2014 met with public ridicule and was short-lived. However, with changing consumer perceptions and advancements in technology, Google is working on a second generation of smart glasses, dubbed Project Aura, that will include an in-lens display.
